I love that more people are thinking about climate and the environment. Lately, Mother and I have had some serious chats about organic cotton.
Here’s the thing: I wanted to go all-in. Mother refused to waste what already exists. Across continents there are vast storerooms of perfectly good cotton that’s hard to sell now, simply because buyers want to signal new awareness.
If there’s one thing to know about Mother: when she argues a point, it’s sound.
So yes - alongside certified organic, I’ll also use rescued cotton. It would be wasteful to ignore fabric that’s already been planted, tended, harvested, and woven. Those poor rolls don’t deserve exile to dusty shelves just to because they are not “on trend.”
Organic cotton is the future, and I’ll happily be part of it. But right now there are massive amounts of beautiful cotton considered “out of fashion.” As long as new production is grown responsibly, there’s no harm in giving existing cloth a life. Wasting it would be the real shame.
